MARGAO: The Principal District and Sessions Judge South Goa, Mr U V Bakre, on Saturday acquitted Santan Sales Fernandes (38) from Assolna, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Presidio Mendes (67) from Assolna in the year 2008. Presidio was strangled to death with coir rope tied to his neck and hands at his residence.
The Cuncolim police with the assistance of Bandra police had arrested the accused from Bandra on November 27, 2008. The incident of murder had taken place at Assolna on August 17, 2008.
Police had disclosed that Ms Ana Mendes, the wife of deceased had lodged a complaint stating that when she returned after attending morning prayers she found her husband dead.
According to police investigation the accused, who was residing with the victim had entered into an argument with him after being told to leave. The accused according to the police had demanded money for leaving the house which was refused by the deceased. Police said that a finger ring was also taken away from the house. In all, the prosecution examined 28 witnesses including the investigating police officer.
Mr A Norbert Fernandes appeared on behalf of the accused under free legal aid while Mr P S Hede the public prosecutor represented the state.
