MAPUSA: The Mapusa Asilo hospital has been in the news for the wrong reasons. While sometime back it was a case where a lady from Anjuna bled to death soon after delivery, on Friday, coincidentally, another woman from the same constituency was injured when a heavy wooden wall frame fell on her head, while she was sitting.
According to information, Ms Prabhalata Naik, aged around 50 from Badem-Assagao, had come with her relative, Ms Tejasvi Naik, who was to undergo surgery on Friday, on her hand which she had fractured a few days ago. While Ms Naik was sitting in the hospital, a heavy wooden picture frame that was hanging on the wall above her head, gave way and fell on her head, causing her serious head injuries. This gave rise to panic as she began to bleed profusely from her wounds and people were trying to get a doctor to attend to her, who was found and who then administered the necessary treatment.
In the meantime, the former Tivim MLA, Mr Sadanand Shet Tanavade, reached the hospital and began to inquire about the health of the victim. Siolim MLA, Mr Dayanand Mandrekar, in whose constituency the victim resides, on being informed rushed to the hospital to take stock of the situation. He then contacted the Health Minister, Mr Vishwajeet Rane, and apprised him on the situation. Mr Rane also arrived later at the scene and after inquiring about the health of the victim, asked that she be moved to the GMC for further treatment. Mr Rane also assured all necessary medical treatment to the victim at the GMC and contacted the doctors there. Later he took a round of the hospital, along with Mr Mandrekar and the superintendent, Mr Dalvi.
When asked when the New District Hospital would be inaugurated, especially since such ugly incidents were taking place at Asilo, Mr Rane said that he too was interested in early inauguration of the New District Hospital, but felt that once necessary requirements were fulfilled, only then could the new hospital be thrown open for the public. Meanwhile, since the victim was a fisherwoman, a number of fisherwomen came to inquire about her health. Their leader, Ms Shashikala Govekar was critical of the fact that the inauguration of the New District Hospital was delayed, saying that the hospital should be inaugurated at the earliest and lives of people should not be put to risk in
the Asilo.
The secretary of the North Goa BJP block, Mr Rupesh Kamat has also strongly condemned the incident saying, “Our stand all along has been to open the New District Hospital and our stand has been vindicated by what has happened today. Today a photoframe fell, tomorrow it could be the ceiling,” and added that the proposed strike from August 16 in this connection was on schedule.
