Yash Fadte in finals

PANAJI: Yash Fadte has reached the finals of the Indian Junior Open 2018 which is being held at Cricket Club of India, Mumbai. Yash beat top seed Tushar Shahani of Maharashtra 3-1 in the semifinals in the U-19 category. Yash will be playing Veer Chotrani of Maharashtra in the finals.

 

GU in kho kho pre-qualifying round

TALEIGAO: Goa University beat Gondwana University by an inning and one point to set up pre qualifying match against Dr BR Ambedkar University, Aurangabad in the West Zone Inter University Kho Kho Championship for Men being held at Dadar, Mumbai. Earlier, in the first round GU defeated Kaach University by 14 points and one inning, while in the second they beat VNS Gujarat University by two points.

 

Sharada Mandir, Rosary HS Dona Paula emerge chess champs

KHORLIM: Sharada Mandir School, Miramar and Our Lady of Rosary High School, Dona Paula emerged winners in boys and girls categories respectively on the second day of the 5-Day Chess Festival, jointly organised by Bardez Taluka Chess Association and Saraswat Vidhyalay’s Sridora Caculo College at Khorlim Mapusa, on Saturday. St Joseph Institute, Vasco and Manovikas English Medium School, Margao won second and third places respectively in boys category, while GVM’s AJ De Almeida HS, Ponda and GS Amonkar Vidhya Mandir, Mapusa came second and third in girls category. Total seven rounds were played in which 44 teams from across Goa participated.

 

Milagres edge out HC Arambol

CALANGUTE: Milagres Sports Club scored a hard-fought solitary goal win over Holy Cross Sports Club, Arambol in the GFA’s Second Division League match played at Poriat ground, Calangute on Saturday. Milagres SC’s Nitesh Salgaonkar scored the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute, after both sides played a barren first session. Milagres SC’s Manuel Fernandes went into referee’s books for rough play while three of Arambol players were cautioned. Prathesh Gawas, Godwin Fernandes and Amit Rane were flashed yellow cards for indecent play.

 

Merces ride on Rahul double

TALEIGAO: Riding on Rahul Naik’s twin strikes Merces Club thrashed St Mathew Sports Club of Azossim 4-0 in the GFA’s Third Division League match played at Taleigao ground, on Saturday. The winners scored two goals in the either half. Suka Vengurlekar gave Merces the lead in the 20th minute as he after receiving a through-pass from Govind Mahale dribbled past couple of defenders and placed the ball to the far corner, 1-0. Jayendra doubled the lead just before the breather when he was provided a long ball from the midfield which he controlled brilliantly before making a run in the box to make it 2-0. Crossing over, St Mathew were punished once again in the 76th minute as Rahul Naik consolidated the lead. Rahul completed his brace in the dying minutes of the game to complete the rout.

 

Compassion FC win

Pilar: Compassion FC Saturday registered their second victory in the GFA U-14 Ilhas Zone League, as they outclassed Ponda Footballers 3-0, at the Fr Agnel’s ground, Pilar. Ashish Kumar scored Compassion FC’s first goal in the 17th minute, while Kailash scored in the 31st minute to double their lead. Compassion should have scored few more goals if only their finishing skills were up to the mark.  Their last and final goal was scored by Sitroy Carvalho in the 59th minute through a neat placement off the ball to the right of Ponda goalkeeper, who brought about at least half a dozen saves. With this win Compassion FC have 6 points from 4 matches while Ponda Footballers are yet to open their account.
