PANAJI: GM Anurag Mhamal finished fourth in the recently concluded 20th Sants International Open Chess Tournament in Barcelona, Spain.
Anurag was tied for the 1st place along with five other GMs with 8 points from 10 rounds, but according to the playoff rule of the tournament, he finished 4th behind 1st-placed GM Nisipeanu Dieter of Germany, 2nd-placed GM Moussard Jules of France and GM Illescas Cordoba Miguel of Spain who stood third.
Anurag, the Dempo goodwill ambassador, remained undefeated in the tournament winning six games and drawing four. During the tournament, he defeated GM Swiercz Dariusz (2669) of Poland, GM Cruz Cristhian (2571) of Peru and drew with GM Gledura Benjamin (2626) of Hungary and GM Petrov Nikita (2591) of Russia.
The Goan also defeated two International Masters IM Ippolito Dean of USA and IM Morawietz Dieter of Germany besides drawing with IM Ruiz Castillo Joshua of Colombia and IM Lavrov Maxim of Russia. Anurag was seeded 27th in the tournament. Earlier he had finished 7th at the Dieren International Open Amsterdam, Netherlands.
