PANAJI: “I am thinking in terms of having a tournament in the League format for boys Under-14 and Under-16 for the 2017-18 season. Our youth need to get involved in competition and since there is nothing going on for them, I have already approached two companies and intend to meet more companies for sponsorships,” Goa Football Association (GFA) secretary Welvin Menezes told The Navhind Times.
Welvin Menezes was first elected to the GFA Executive committee in 2010 as member of the Ilhas zone and was appointed deputy of the competition committee. “At that time we were in charge of the conduct of various tournaments of GFA. In due course, it became clear that the youth had no avenues for completion. That is why our teams do not shine in the age group tournaments. That is why I am striving to introduce this six month long tournament for the Under-14 and Under-16.
“The role of the secretary is not easy. I initially thought I would manage giving half of my day’s time. I now realise this is a full time job. There is a lot that needs to be done and I have no regrets,” Welvin disclosed.
“Correspondence, lionising with the DSYA and SAG and other departments is one of my main priorities. Plus there are matters involving generating finance for various tournaments. Companies promise to assist but tend to back out at the last minute. I am trying to figure out what are the problems that keep corporate away and try to work a way round. It is not possible to go ahead without financial support,” said Welvin.
