GEC lecture series emphasizes on women in geotechnical engineering

The Goa Engineering College (GEC) in collaboration with the local chapter of the Indian Geotechnical society (IGS), recently organized the second edition of the Dr Victor de Mello Goa lecture. Internationally recognised geotechnical engineer, Dr Luiz Guilherme de Mello, Sao Paolo, Brazil, the son of De Victor De Mello was the key note speaker at the lecture.

Presenting in-depth case studies of two major dams in the Amazon basin of Brazil, Dr de Mello spoke on dam engineering. Earlier, he inaugurated the lecture series in the presence of Prof Sivakumar Babu, professor, IISC Bengaluru  Principal V N Shet, Prof KG Gupta, Prof  Purnanand Savoikar and Prof Nisha Naik..

GEC toppers Mandira Mhablu Faldesai, Manasi Sunil Raut were felicitated at the event. Prof Savoikar sketched out the life and notable contributions of Dr Victor de Mello. Prof Smita Aldonkar compered the event while Prof Shwetha Prasanna proposed the vote of thanks. The key note lecture was followed by invited theme lectures on reliability analysis on filtration criteria and stability issues of tailing dam and canal sections in India during earthquakes by Prof GL Sivakumar Babu, and Prof Deepankar Choudhury. The event was sponsored by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, Maccaferri, Alcon Industries and IGS.

A special symposium was held on women in geotechnical engineering. Prof Gali Madhavi Latha, Dr R Chitra, Dr Neelima Satyam, and Minimol Korulla, were felicitated by Prof Babu and Prof Choudhury. Prof Nisha summarized the proceedings while Prof Sumitra compered the valedictory session and proposed the vote of thanks. This technical mega event was attended by over 120 engineers and students from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The faculty and staff of the civil engineering department contributed majorly in making the event memorable.
