Gearing up for Goa Triathlon

With the fifth edition of the Goa Triathlon, Enduro Sports Goa is all set to host the sporting event that has gained popularity, on February 11 beginning from the Bambolim Bay. NT BUZZ brings you the details of this event that will have participants push their limits in three disciplines – swimming, cycling, and running

After having organised four editions of Goa Triathlon in the past, Enduro Sports Goa has returned yet again with the 5th edition of the endurance-sport event. As the name suggests Triathlon is a multiple-stage competition involving the completion of three continuous endurance disciplines – swimming, cycling, and running, in immediate succession over various distances. A record 430 triathletes across the world have registered for the forthcoming event to be held on February 11 starting from the Bambolim Bay.

The Goa Triathlon was born out of an idea to make Goa known as a tourist destination for sporting activities over other attractions. “The idea of The Goa Triathlon was to promote Goa as a family destination for sporting activities. The 1st edition of The Goa Triathlon held in 2014 witnessed the participation of just 91 participants but today the event has grown and as many as 500 participants,” says co-founder of Enduro Sports, Ronald Fernandes. The Enduro Sports team comprises of four members, the other three being Elias Patel, Michelle Gouveia and Joseph Rodrigues, who brought triathlon to Goa.

At the event the participants will have to use their muscular power, speed, balance, coordination, accuracy and agility to complete the three stages of the Triathlon. This year, the Goa Triathlon offers athletes the choice of three categories; the Super Sprint Triathlon, The Olympic Triathlon and for the first time, the Sprint Duathlon. The Olympic event begins with a 1.5 kilometres swim in the Bambolim Bay, immediately followed by 40 kilometres of cycling around the Goa University road circuit, which also doubles up as the course for the 10 kilometres run which concludes the race. “The participants will have to do their best, even at times pushing themselves to their limits, in this endurance sport, if they want to secure the top few positions,” says Fernandes.

Although registrations for the event have closed, Fernandes appeals all sports enthusiasts to attend this Triathlon. For the visitors who are going to make it for the event, spectators can catch the action from designated points on Bambolim beach and Goa University Road from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. “The concept of Triathlon is comparatively new, it is through such events that we want to expose the participants and spectators to triathlons,” he says

A special expo has been organised on the eve of the Goa Triathlon, on February 10 at the Bambolim Beach Resort that will see multiple sports equipment stalls, talks by prominent triathletes, talk on safety by DrishtiMarine, in an attempt to build up the sporting spirit for the main event.
