Fish infested with maggots sold at Curchorem fish market




An incident involving a vendor selling rotten fish infested with maggots was seen at the Curchorem fish market on Thursday morning.

Two persons were arguing with the fish vendor over the purchase of mackerels. The customers showed this daily the maggots by opening the gills of a mackerel.

Health officer Mohanrao Dessai said that the issue does not come under his jurisdiction and said that the CCMC authorities and the FDA should act in this matter.

The police inspector of Curchorem police station Ravindra Dessai immediately sent PSI Viju Dessai and a lady constable to the fish market to investigate the matter. The fish vendor admitted selling the mackerels which he had reportedly purchased from Margao wholesale fish market.

The AMI of CCMC was also summoned to the spot and the police directed him to seize the fish and take appropriate action in the matter.

CCMC chief officer Kapil Phadte said that the civic body has no power under the municipal act to take action against fish vendors who sell rotten fish. It is the FDA who has powers to take action in such matters. Phadte said that he has written to the FDA to take action on rotten fish being sold in the market.
