A fireball from the crashing MiG-29K aircraft burnt the belongings of a resident of the Sodovi ward of Verna on Saturday.
John Rodrigues, who resides at a distance of nearly a kilometre from the site of crash, said that utensils, washing machine, decorative lights, plastic tables, plywood and several other household items were destroyed in the fire after a part of the crashed jet landed on a portion of his house. Luckily, Rodrigues was not at home when the incident occurred.
“I was not at home. Had we been home, we would have lost our lives. My neighbours got together and put off the fire immediately, as they saw flames engulfing my room,’’ said Rodrigues and thanked his neighbours for saving his house from getting destroyed.
“We had gone out for shopping in connection with my sister-in-law’s wedding. Some of the items destroyed were purchased a few days back. The local panch has visited our place. Legislator Babashan (Wilfred D’Sa) has also promised to help us,” said Rodrigues.
As he was explaining how the incident had troubled him, a police official reached at the spot to carry out panchanama of the site and estimate the loss. Rodrigues was asked to visit the police station for further formalities.
“I had to use ten buckets of water to put off the fire. There was a blast that drew our attention. I alerted my neighbour and we all rushed towards Rodrigues’ house to put off the fire,” said Conceicao Fernandes. She said minutes later, she saw the two pilots attempting to land with the help of parachutes. “I called out to my neighbours and informed them,” she said.
