PANAJI: Referring to the exemplary performance made by women in all fields, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that the government has accepted the proposal to enroll women platoon in the department of fire and emergency services.
He was speaking as a chief guest at the National Fire Service Day function organised by department of fire and emergency services on Tuesday.
Parsekar said that in coming years the fire services department will have women fire fighters to enter this all-male institution in 30 years of its existence. “Women have excelled in every field the proposal to recruit female platoon has been approved by us”, he added.
It has to be mentioned here that in 2010, a proposal was made to allow women to become firefighters, which would have made Goa the first state in western India to do so.
Expressing the importance of fire department, that is one of the most essential services of the organised society, Parsekar said that fires can be devastating as they can tear apart families and destroy homes. He further said, “The worst thing about fires at home and within business is that most of them are entirely preventable. By flouting general safety guidelines every day people put themselves at risk, be it objecting fire NOC, putting faulty electrical fixtures at home so also illegal connections by shack owners that has resulted in massive losses to life and property.”
He further said that the fire fighter plays a very important role to stop spreading of fire thereby risking their lives and hence it is very essential to pay homage
A guard of honor was presented to the chief guest, who took the salute and inspected the parade. Later, twelve fire personnel were awarded commendation certificates at the hands of Parsekar for their dedicated service in firefighting and rescue operations. An exhibition on firefighting apparatus and rescue operations was also organised.
