Calangute police have filed an FIR against Calangute MLA Michael Lobo following a complaint from a local alleging assault on him.
The complaint has been lodged by Kevin D’Sousa over the alleged incident that occurred at Calangute market on Wednesday afternoon. As per information, Kevin, who runs a business in the fish market, questioned a contractor over the work of the construction of a chapel in the market and this led to the alleged incident.
When MLA Lobo was asked about the matter, he said that comments were being posted on
Facebook and circulated in the social media that BJP government has vandalised a cross in the fish market.
“I had gone to see the ongoing work of the chapel, which has been taken up for reconstruction. However, a local by name Kevin D’Souza started threatening the contractor and also abused me. As such, my bodyguard pushed him aside and he fell down and got himself injured. Later he was handed over to Calangute police. I have not assaulted him,” said Lobo.
It is learnt that Kevin is the nephew of ex-sarpanch of Calangute Joseph Sequeira. He told this daily that he neither abused the MLA nor threatened the contractor.
Calangute PI Jivba Dalvi said that he has received complaints from both the parties; while the MLA has made a written complaint alleging that Kevin abused him and even threatened him with dire consequences, Kevin in his counter complaint alleged that he was assaulted by the MLA. The victim was sent for medical examination at GMC and the report stated that there are no grave injury marks on the body. An FIR has been filed against the MLA and a case has been registered under Sections 323, 504 and 506 (2).
Meanwhile, DySP Kiran Podwal was also present at the Calangute police station and told media that both complaints have been received and action will be taken as per law.
