The Country Focus-China section of the 45th International Film Festival of India opened with the film ‘Finding Mr Right’ on November 21 at the Kala Academy. Present for the opening were vice minister of State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio and Film of China, Tony Gang, secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Bimal Julka, director of ‘Finding Mr Right’ Xue Xiaolu, Chinese superstars Zhang Ziyi and Tony Leung, and director, Directorate of Film Festivals Shankar Mohan.
Bimal Jhulka in his opening address speaking about the common factors India and China share besides being neighbours said that the two countries can collaborate creatively to launch media with a great bang. He further said, “At the 45th IFFI, making the country focus China was a major step taken as an initiative from our side to showcase the best films of China and to appreciate talent.”
Minister of State Admin of Press, Publication, Radio and Film of China Tony Gang was delighted to be in Goa to witness the film festival. He said, “We have brought nine recent Chinese film productions, all of high level artistic work and technical production, which will teach audiences about the history of China, besides informing about the culture, traditions and the reforms of the country.”
The minister, who spoke in Chinese, didn’t forget to mention how world over and in China Indian films have charmed people and he hoped that the collaboration would help both countries deliver good cinema in the near future.
Chine superstar Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi, both leading actors of ‘The Grandmaster’, a 2013 Hong Kong-Chinese martial arts drama film, which has been chosen as the closing film of the festival, were more than delighted to speak at the inaugural of the Country Focus section. The director of ‘The Grandmaster’ Wong Kar Wai will be conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award during the closing ceremony of the 45th IFFI.
Zhang Ziyi confessed that the dance performance by national award winning actress and Bharatnatyam dancer Shobana and troupe at the inaugural ceremony held on November 20 was inspiring. “The opening ceremony opened my eyes. In the future I will combine martial arts of China and Indian classical dance to make something really fantastic”, she said.
Director of the opening film ‘Finding Mr Right’, Xue Xiaolu was felicitated at the hands of director, Directorate of Film Festivals Shankar Mohan. In a speech she made before the screening of her film, Xiaolu said, “I am grateful that my film has been chosen as the opening film in Country Focus section.” She also mentioned that as a little girl Indian films always impressed her and that the films have allowed viewers to understand India and its culture better.
