The feast of St Francis Xavier, revered as ‘Goencho Saib’, will be celebrated with devotion and enthusiasm at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa, on Tuesday.
After a preparation through the novenas held for the last nine days, with the theme ‘Rooted in Christ like St Francis Xavier, go and do likewise’, the feast of St Francis Xavier will be celebrated in Goa by people of all walks of life.
The High Mass or feast mass will begin at 10.30 am and will be celebrated by Bishop of Mangaluru Peter
Paul Saldanha, Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao, other bishops and priests.
The masses will begin in the morning at 4 am, 5 am, 6 am, 7 am, 8 am, and 9 am (all in Konkani). There will also be a Konkani mass at 12:30 pm.
A Spanish mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m.
In the evening, Konkani masses will be held at 4 pm and 5 pm. The feast will end with an English mass at 6 pm.
On this day people make their way to Old Goa, to pray and seek blessings of the saint.
A large fair set up at the world heritage site is an added attraction for the faithful, who like to spend time with family and friends.
