Eyes on the Gold

CHRISTINE MACHADO | NT BUZZ

She is popularly known as ‘Magnificent Mary’.  And true to her nick name, the six time world amateur boxing champion Mary Kom continues to stun and enamour people both inside the boxing ring and outside. Indeed, she won hearts yet again as she shared a few glimpses into her amazing journey at the just concluded Goafest 2019. “I was really worried for the last ten years as the sport was facing a lot of difficulties but that is all changing now,” she says. And she is aware that her splendid performance time and again has much to do with this positive change. “After having three children, to still keep winning and become number one is not easy. But I have proved many times that it is possible,” she says.

However, while she has received plenty of medals and honours, for Mary her dream is not fulfilled yet. “In my personal opinion I feel that one medal is still lacking – an Olympic gold,” she says. And indeed, the boxing champion is training hard for the 2020 edition in Tokyo and is hoping to bring home that one missing medal in her kitty. “I am trying my best and giving my 100 per cent in training but I know that it is not an easy job. However I believe that if one has will power, determination and is willing to put in the hard work, no one can beat you. It is all about passion. One should never give up and keep fighting,” she believes. Further she advises that people should face all the challenges that come their way. “If you do not face these challenges, be it big or small, then you will not get what you want in life,” she says.

And while Mary Kom is truly a boxing star, not everyone knows that the sports champion is also a wonderful singer. In fact, the sports personality left the audience wanting more when she sang at the Goa Fest session. She further consented to sing yet another tune ‘Just an Illusion’ by Julia Zahra at the media interaction.

“Singing is another one of my passions. During my childhood days I used to sing in my community and people were quite surprised to hear me sing,” she reveals, adding that music gives her a boost of energy. “Sometimes doing the same boxing routine can get boring but when you listen to music it gives you energy. It frees the mind and keeps it fresh so you can focus better on training after that,” says Mary, who incidentally was recently part of the music video ‘Unstoppable’ by Ananya Birla, featuring alongside other stars like Sania Mirza and Juhi Chawla.

And as for her Goa Fest experience, the star stated that it was an honour to be a part of the event and while she has been to Goa previously, she is yet to properly explore it. “I want to see all the corners of Goa and experience its beauty. I hope that I will get an opportunity to travel around soon,” she said.
