“Empowerment of women should be carried out in its true sense and our government is committed towards providing women with financial support,” said minister for Women and Child Development, Vishwajit Rane. He further said that the process of empowering women has already been initiated through various welfare schemes in the state.

Rane was speaking as the chief guest at a function held on the occasion of Women’s Day organised by the Phoenix Women’s Wing Self-Help Group at Laxmibai Memorial hall, Valpoi.

Eight women who contributed to society through their work were felicitated at the hands of Rane in the presence of chairperson, Valpoi Municipal Council, Akhtar Shah; vice-chairperson, Parvin Khan; councillors, Ramdas Shirodkar, Sarfaraj Sayyed and Atul Datye; president, PWSHG, Shuneza Khan; president, Phoenix Socio Cultural Association, Abdulla Khan and Majida Aga.

Speaking on the occasion, Rane assured the gathering that the government would continue to operate in full capacity with a view to providing good opportunities to women in all fields in the coming years. He further expressed his gratitude to the PWSHG for recognising the contributions of so many women from Valpoi.

Akhtar Shah congratulated the organisers for organising the event. Councillor Ramdas Shirodkar praised the work done by the NGO Phoenix in empowering women and youth at Valpoi and requested them to extend their work beyond Sattari. Advocate Kala Dalal; PSI of police, Karisma Purulekar; dentist, Rajashree Murthy; municipal staff, Rajshree Daboskar; Dueball women’s team of Goa and panch member, Tereza Andrade were honoured on the occassion. A dance performance along with games were also conducted for women. The first female musical band of Goa was launched at the event.
