Panaji: The government has reinstated into service Dr Iona Barreto, who was dismissed from service for allegedly indulging in private practice.

Dr Barreto had filed an appeal before Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, the appellate authority, against the dismissal order of the Directorate of Vigilance.

After hearing the appellant, perusing the file record and after a careful consideration of the facts of the case and the report of the inquiring authority and grounds taken by the appellant, who had worked for almost 14 years, and considering the service left of the officer, Sawant, as the appellate authority, decided to take a lenient view, mentions the order. The order was issued by Sawant on October 25.

Dr Barreto has been reinstated into service and a penalty of reduction in pay to a lower stage imposed.

It may be recalled that on September 10, this year, Dr Barreto, who was attached to the Canacona community health centre was dismissed from service for allegedly indulging in private practice.

The allegations were related to the time when she was attached to the Hospicio Hospital in Margao. Subsequently, the government referred the matter to the Directorate of Vigilance and an inquiry was initiated under major penalty. The vigilance inquiry was also proved against her, informed sources.

Dr Barreto had joined the health department in 2005.
