Dempo SC jump back to the top

DULER: Dempo Sports Club have jumped back to the top position of the Goa Football Association’s (GFA) Professional League after scalping Panjim Footballers 4-0 at Duler stadium on Tuesday. Dempo, who had surrendered the initiative to Sporting Clube de Goa after suffering their first defeat now await the winners of today’s match between Sporting Clube de Goa and FC Bardez. After the win, Dempo have 12 points while Panjim Footballers stay on five points.

Panjim Footballers coach Savio Vaz made four changes in his starting line-up, bringing in Dominic Soares, Michael Dias, Harshad Naik and Chandan Gawas while Dempo SC in-charge Samir Naik started with the same squad that had lost to Sporting in their last league match.

It was the Golden Eagles who had the better ball possession but Panjim side came close to opening their account in the 23rd minute when Snedden Rodrigues sent the ball to Clifton Fernandes inside the penalty box but Nestor Dias cleared the ball for a corner.

Dempo’s Kapil Hoble curled his shot at the goal to find Panjim’s Dominic Soares dive to clear the ball for a corner.

In the 33rd minute, Velito Cruz set up Latesh Mandrekar whose strike from top of the penalty box hit the side goal post and entered the nets, 1-0.

Four minutes later, Panjim’s Kunal Kundalkar came with a harsh tackle on Kapil Hoble inside the penalty box, prompting the referee Tejas Nagvenkar not only to point to the dreaded spot but also send off the player. However Beevan D’Mello shot out from the penalty spot.

Panjim side had two chances to level terms but Clifton Fernandes strike was collected by Dempo keeper Agnelo Gomes with a diving save and minutes later Snedden Rodrigues shot over the crossbar from close.

On resumption of play, it did not take long for the Golden Eagles to double their lead as in the 48th minute a pinpoint cross by Yogesh Kadam was headed by Kapil into the goal, 2-0.

In the very next minute, Beevan D’Mello saw his powerful header off Nickson Castanha’s cross hit the woodwork.

The play for the next 30 minutes was restricted to midfield.

In the closing stages of the match Dempo pumped in two more goals. A neat through-pass inside the penalty box by substitute Vinit Bugde to substitute Desmon Pereira in the 80th minute saw the latter tap the ball past Panjim keeper Gurpreet Singh, 3-0.

Joaquim Abranches collected a long floater from Nickson and moved inside the penalty box and drilled a right footer which was blocked by keeper Gurpreet.

However, in the 83rd minute Joaquim managed to get his name to the scorers list as he chipped the ball into the goal to make it 4-0.
