Dempo SC dent Velsao, re-take top slot

A brace by striker Joaquim Abranches, in the second session, enabled Dempo Sports Club register a 2-0 win against Velsao Sports and Cultural Club in the GFA Professional Football League match played at SAG grounds, Utorda on Saturday and climb to the top of the table.

Joaquim, who missed some glaring chances in the first session from close distance, made up for his lost opportunities and struck in the 52nd and 87th minute of play to give Dempo Sports Club three points.

Though Velsao Sports and Cultural Club created two good openings in the first minutes of play the teams trooped out for the lemon break with the scoreboard reading goalless.

If Velsao Sports and Cultural Club could not take their chances it was due to the excellent defending by ever alert Mathew Gonsalves who was the heart of Dempo S C defense for the major part of play.

Velsao’s  medio Flan Gomes spelt danger for Dempo S C team ,moving menacingly on quite a few occasions and besides sending some defense splitting passes, Flan himself  tried thrice to beat Dempo S C keeper  Tyson Caido who stood bravely under the bar, making some spectacular saves.

Tyson prevented the Dempo citadel from crumbling under pressure when Velsao threatened with counter forays. Tyson’s reading of the ball was superb and with great anticipation, he advanced forward before any Velsao strikers could cause the damage. Tyson brought off great saves off Velsao’s striker Lalwang Bohham, who otherwise was well bottled up by defender Mathew Gonsalves.

Dempo Sports Club took the lead following a good cross by Jessel Carneiro and Abranches dashed in and headed the ball past the bewildered Velsao Sports and Cultural Club keeper Presley Macarenhas.

Dempo Sports Club could have been three goals up in the first session itself but Beevan D’Mello who had the first opportunity to find the mark, headed wide from the very shadow of the rival goal.

Then, it was Jessel Carneiro who overlapped well but sent his shot wide off the mark off a great cross by defender Naveen Mendes and thereafter it was Joaquim Abranches who only could shake his head when the ball fell to him and he missed from six yards.

Dempo S C buttressed their lead in the 87th minute of play when Joaquim Abranhces completed his brace with a stiff grounder off a cross from the left flank to beat Velsao keeper Presley. With this win, Dempo S C has collected 29 points from 12 matches to take the top slot while Velsao Sports and Cultural Club have 17 points.
