Dempo leave Cavelossim fighting to avoid relegation

Dempo Sports Club registered a deserving 4-2 win over Santa Cruz Sports Club Cavelossim in the Goa Professional League organised by Goa football Association (GFA) at Duler stadium under floodlights, on Monday.

Though the match started at 7.30 pm, the timings failed to attract even 14 paid spectators to watch the tussle between relegation savers Cavelossim and title aspirants Dempo SC.

With Monday’s win Dempo has 44 points from 19 matches, while Cavelossim has finished their engagements with 16 points from 22 matches.

The Golden Eagles struck early, when it was just four minutes old.

Beevan D’Mello sent a neat through pass to Velito Cruz who intelligently chipped the ball over the Cavelossim keeper Razak Devsor into the goal, 1-0.

While Cavelossim failed to convert in the 41st minute Golden Eagles doubled their lead when Desmond Pereira flashed the ball from the left flank to unmarked Kapil Hoble who stabbed the ball into the goal, 2-0.

On crossing ends, Cavelossim pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute when Samson Simoes sent a cross to well positioned defender Nevile Fernandes who latched a right footer to the far corner of the goal, 2-1. Dempo retaliated two minutes later with their third goal as Beevan D’Mello directed his header off Nickson Castanha’s cross into the goal, 3-1.

However, in the 67th minute, Cavelossim caught the rival defense napping as Allwyn Vaz sent a perfect cross to Samson Simoes who tapped the ball home, 3-2.

While Cavelossim went all out in search of the equaliser, Dempo netted in their fourth goal in the 84th minute and Velito Cruz completed his brace as he curled his short from top of the penalty box into the goal, 4-2.
