A twenty-two minute blitz saw Dempo Juniors drub Cuncolim Union 6-0 in the Goa Football Association Inter District 2nd Division Play-off, at Duler stadium on Saturday.
In a fast paced first session, both teams came close to scoring, but both keepers displayed excellent reflexes to keep the scoreline goalless at the break.
As early as the 3rd minute, Cuncolim’s Samson Simoes shot from close was blocked by Dempo keeper Flezbern Souza. Two minutes later, it was Cuncolim keeper David Rebello who came to his side’s rescue confidently collecting Araon’s Alvares long range effort.
In a one to one with the keeper, Samson Simoes missed a golden chance to put his side ahead as his shot was blocked by the Dempo custodian. At the other end, an unmarked Boris D’Mello failed to score from handshaking distance, after the Cuncolim keeper’s clearance off a long ball by Aaron Rodrigues landed at his feet.
In the 34th minute, Dempo’s Jason Lucas squandered a sitter from close range. A minute later, capitalizing on a defense lapse by Dempo, Sampana Rebello crossed for Samson Simoes, whose low grounder came agonizingly close to give Cuncolim the lead.
Just before the break, Dempo’s Boris D’Mello shot on goal after moving up the left flank, but missed the mark.
After the break, Dempo’s Hayden Fernandes was unlucky not to score, as his shot hit the upright and came back into play. At the other end, Dempo keeper Flezbern could only manage to block Cuncolim’s Presley Pinto’s goal bound shot, Samson Simoes made a hash of the rebound, shooting wide when well positioned to score.
The Cuncolim keeper brought off a great save in the 71st minute keeping out Kapil Hoble’s shot from close. However, he could do nothing a minute later when Jason Lucas scored from inside the six yard box on his second attempt to give Dempo the lead. The second goal came a minute later when Hayden’s fierce right footer beat the Cuncolim keeper.
Jason then beat a couple of defenders and rounded the Cuncolim keeper to score his second goal in the 74th minute, 3-0.
In the 82nd minute, Dempo’s Boris D’Mello lobbed the Cuncolim keeper, who was off his line for Dempo’s fourth goal. Kapil Hoble’s injury time brace completed the rout.
