The Dangal girl, Sanya Malhotra comes to Goa every year along with her family on vacation but this was the first time that she was here for work purpose. Having flagged-off the five-kilometre run at the Skechers Performance Goa River Marathon, Sanya believes that a marathon is not only about fitness or being active. For her a marathon is the time when the whole community comes together and thus seeing so many people come together and run, makes her feel really good.

Choosing roles and films

Talking about her thought process behind choosing roles and films, Sanya says that whenever she is reading a script or getting a narration that is when she can totally imagine herself in the character. “The other factors I keep in mind are who is directing the film, what is the production house. If the script is good you have to make sure that the production house is also good enough because what if the film does not release?,” says Sanya adding that however, she has been very fortunate with the films she is doing and the kind of people she is working with.

Experience of working with Aamir Khan in Dangal

Sanya did her first film with Aamir Khan as an actor. She says that it was amazing working with him and also thinks that it is how she got introduced to fitness as well through Dangal training.

How a film like ‘Badhaai Ho’ fair well amongst other big budget films

According to Sanya the reason for Badhaai Ho’s success is the content and plus the audience. She says: “The audience really has changed a lot from the past one year. I would say it is very important for a film to have nice content and good performances to work. And ‘Badhaai Ho’ was really good at script level itself.” She adds that when she heard the narration for ‘Badhaai Ho’ for the first time she knew it is going to be very special and is really glad it is still doing so well.

Working with director Vishal Bhardwaj in ‘Pataakha’

Vishal Bhardwaj was her dream director to work with, she says: “Pataakha was a wonderful opportunity for me. I got to learn a lot as an actor through the whole process because that character was very different from what I am in real life. And Vishal gives you a wonderful space to work; he gives you a lot of preparation time.”

Her fitness mantra

The actress like being active, and running and walking is something that she really enjoys. Though she does other kind of activities too such as gymming or crossfit training to stay fit but she feels that walking and running is good for physical and mental health. “My fitness mantra is being active and it is not just about having a certain body type or having abs and good cut muscles; fitness for me is being mentally fit,” she adds.

Upcoming projects

Sanya will soon be seen next in Ritesh Batra’s ‘Photograph’. “I did a film with Nawazuddin Siddiqui and we are going to Sundance Film Festival for that; it is called ‘Photograph’.

Her love for Goa

She likes everything about Goa, the food, the beaches, she says. “I think Goa is a wonderful place to be and not do anything. Goans are so chilled out, nobody is running behind anything. They are at peace.”
