Councillors from the Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) on Friday called on the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and requested him to help the municipality in improving the existing solid waste management facilities as well as executing development projects including the administrative building project in Cuncolim.
Eight councillors including deputy chairperson Viddesh Dessai met the Chief Minister and requested him to appoint a full-time chief officer for the municipality. The councillors also submitted a letter to the CM as well as the directorate of Municipal Administration about the municipality’s requirements.
Laying more focus on strengthening and building the solid waste management system in the municipality, the councillors sought additional labourers to help in the garbage collection process. Currently the municipality engages labourers in collecting door-to-door garbage but also plans on introducing roadside garbage collection.
Estimating need of around 4 to 5 labourers for each of the 12 wards, the council plans to have a total labour workforce of 60 persons at least.
“Currently out of the 30 labourers employed by the municipality, about 10 are unfit which puts a lot of load on the others to collect garbage from all the wards every day. Also, we currently collect garbage through door to door initiative but want to start roadside collection also since it a growing menace,” said councillor Mario Moraes.
Requests were also made for procuring of a mini truck and construction of sheds at the CMC’s garbage treatment plant including flooring of the place from the Fourteenth Finance Commission funds.
The council has for a long time been demanding a full-time chief officer as the current appointee Kapil Phadte has to share charge with the Curchorem Municipality as well as Ravindra Bhavan, Curchorem. The request has also been sent to the state government’s personnel department.
Councillors said that Sawant has assured them of providing support to turn Cuncolim into a model town as well as help in starting and providing additional funds for construction of the municipality’s administration building that will contain municipal as well as state government departments in Cuncolim.
