The Cortalim panchayat members have threatened to break the retaining wall constructed by Dilip Buildcon Ltd (DBL) if the authorities fail to make provision for access to farmers in their fields to move machinery for cultivation.
Speaking to this daily, deputy sarpanch of Cortalim Panchayat Raymond De Sa said that the farmers cultivating fields for the last several years used to move their machinery from their fields from the main road. “But, recently DBL who has been allocated the construction work of the new Zuari Bridge has constructed a retaining wall, adjacent to the fields, causing hardship to farmers”.
“We have brought the issue to the notice of the local legislator, but till date no provision for access has been made by the concerned authorities or by DBL”, said De Sa. He threatened to break the retaining wall in the interest of farmers which would enable them to move their machinery like tractors etc during cultivation and ploughing season.
Anita Kenkre, representing ward-1 alleged that till date the government has not paid compensation to some of the farmers whose lands were acquired for construction of the highway and the new Zuari Bridge.
“The compensation is also not paid to farmers whose lands were acquired for laying the Konkan railway track in Cortalim”, said Kenkre. Kenkre called upon the Minister for Agriculture Vijai Sardessai to resolve the issue of the farmers without any delay.
