Vasco: Parth Dilip Bhuptani (26), a native of Junagad, Gujarat, who was one of the occupants of the passenger rickshaw which met with accident on Cortalim-Vasco stretch of NH17A near Matvem Dabolim on Saturday, succumbed to his injuries, while being taken to the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital, Bambolim.
The other occupant of the rickshaw Subhash Shetye, who is said to be the office colleague of the deceased, and who was also injured in the accident was discharged from the Sub District Hospital Chicalim after he was administered first-aid.
The deceased Bhuptani and Shetye had come down to Goa a couple of days ago from Gujarat, and while they were returning, they hired the ill- fated passenger rickshaw as they failed to hire a car from Panaji.
Both of them were travelling to the Dabolim airport in order to board a flight, but the tragedy struck them on the way.
The Vasco police disclosed that the driver of the rickshaw Vasu Gaonkar, from Taleigao, had a miraculous escape and remained unhurt. It may be recalled that a speeding unknown four wheeler (car) was responsible for the accident. The car while heading towards Cortalim from Vasco dashed against a Maruti Omni Van from behind, which thereafter is learnt to have rammed into the ill-fated rickshaw coming from the opposite direction.
The van belongs to Ratnakar Parsekar of Parsem, Pernem. He along with his wife and son sustained minor injuries in the accident. The trio was referred to the sub district hospital at Chicalim and was discharged.
The Vasco police have registered the case of accident and are trying to trace the four-wheeler which was responsible for the accident.
The body of the deceased was handed over to his relatives, following post-mortem. Further investigation is being conducted by police sub inspector Diago Gracias under the supervision of PI Nilesh Rane.
