DULER: Corps of Signals registered a solitary goal win over Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim in the Goa Professional League match played under floodlights at Duler stadium, here on Sunday.
Signals, having lost their earlier league match against Guardian Angel, started in the right earnest to return home with a win, while SCC Cavelossim — who had stunned Churchill Brothers — wanted to maintain their winning run.
Signals coach Sub Rateesh R made two changes in his starting line-up as he brought in Th Roshan Singh and Salam Singh, while SCC Cavelossim coach Severino Fernandes made just one change as he included Perryson Fernandes.
After Sunday’s win, Signals have six points while Cavelossim stay on three points after their fourth round match.
Though the first session was played at a fast pace nothing much transcribed on the point of goals.
Cavelossim came twice close to open their account. In the 6th minute Perryson Fernandes sent a cross to Mathew Colaco whose header at the goal travelled back to Perryson to find the latter drill a right footer which went just over the crossbar.
Just four minutes later, an intelligent lob pass by Moises D’Sa saw striker Mathew Colaco’s shot miss the target narrowly.
At the other end, Signals Joshley Gomes, Harshad Thube and skipper Pawan Thakur tried to spray some passes to their strikers Th Roshan Singh and Cyril Dias yet they failed to find the target.
The best chance for them came in the 20th minute when defender Chand Singh failed to connect his header inside the goal framework off Pawan Thakur free kick.
A swift run from the right flank and on entering the penalty box saw Perryson Fernandes drill a stiff grounder which was blocked by Signals keeper Niyas Mon.
In the injury time of the first session, Signals keeper Niyas once again came to his team’s rescue as he pushed the ball to safety from a poke on the run by Allywn Vaz from close.
On crossing over, Signals keeper Niyas continued with his fine display under the bar as he positioned himself well to collect a fierce shot from Moises D’Sa.
In the 73rd minute, Cavelossim keeper Sidhesh Morje was tested for the first time when a shot on the turn by substitute Lallawmsangh was brilliantly collected by the keeper.
In a counter attack, Cavelossim’s Daulat Dessai shot at the goal brushed keeper Niyas hand and rebounded off the top corner of the goal.
While Cavelossim did most of the attacking, Signals came with an 82nd minute goal. An intelligent through pass by Harshad Thube was connected into the goal by Lairellakpam Singh which was blocked by keeper Siddhesh to find substitute Vishnu Chetri who was at the right place at the right time to tap the ball home, 1-0.
