A division bench of High Court of Bombay at Goa has adjourned to January 7 further hearing on the contempt petition filed over the alleged inaction of the authorities to the continued dumping of debris and garbage along the Panaji-Old Goa bypass road.

Advocate Aires Rodrigues submitted to the court that over the last year action by the government was only on paper while the dumping of garbage and debris to illegally fill low-lying fields continues unabated across Goa. The court suggested that the government appoint a nodal officer to oversee the handling of the garbage issue.

The contempt petition states that in 2007, a public interest litigation was filed over the rampant dumping of building debris along the Panaji-Old Goa bypass road and that taking serious note of the gross violations of law, various orders came to be passed by the High Court in that petition which was finally disposed on June 26, 2008.
