Calling upon people to come out in large numbers and vote against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates in the Lok Sabha polls on April 23, Congress leaders at a public meeting on Wednesday said that the country was in need of a ‘second liberation’ to remove the BJP from power.

Congress MLAs, leaders as well as youth and mahila committees praising the party’s South Goa Lok Sabha candidate Francisco Sardinha, called upon people to bring the party back to power in the state and exuded confidence of getting back its government at the Centre.

Speaking against the BJP and its decisions for the past five years, Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro said it was time for a second liberation adding, “The first time we had fought for liberation from the British and Portuguese and now this is the second liberation which is from the BJP. In the five years, they have ruined the economy taking the country 50 years behind.”

Leaders also took potshots at the decision to hold the elections in the state during the Holy Week and Easter period.

“Look at the timing at which the elections have been placed, during Holy Week and Easter,” said Leader of Opposition Chandrakant ‘Babu’ Kavalekar. Sardinha said, “People have suffered because of demonetisation and GST. ” he said.

Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco joined Sardinha on stage and urged the public not to cast their vote for AAP.

Margao MLA Digambar Kamat questioned the reason behind the state government completing the Mandovi bridge but leaving the South Goa district hospital in limbo.

Others who attended the meeting included Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias, Velim MLA Filipe Nery Rodrigues, Nuvem MLA Wilfred D’Sa, Congress Mahila president Pratima Coutinho, youth president Arichit Naik, South Goa district president Joe Dias and other leaders.
