Collision of two tankers paralyses traffic along NH 66 for 5 hours

CANACONA: The traffic movement along the national highway 66 was paralysed for over five hours after a tanker carrying 23 tonne of hydrochloric acid crashed head on with an empty LPG tanker, on a narrow bridge at Karmalghat.

The accident left the driver of the LPG tanker injured.

The police informed that the accident occurred at around 3.30 am when the acid tanker heading toward Margao hit against the empty LPG tanker on a narrow bridge at Karmalghat.

According to police sources, the loaded tanker was carrying 23 tonne of hydrochloric acid.

Police rushed to the spot, and cordoned off the area to avert any casualties, and diverted all the incoming traffic from Margao through an internal road while the heavy vehicles coming from Karwar were halted at Polem.

The two heavy vehicles had to be shifted from the road using a crane from Margao and the bridge was cleared for traffic at around 8:30 am. The driver of the LPG tanker suffered leg injuries while the other driver escaped unhurt.

Meanwhile, timely action by an alert truck driver averted a major accident at Gulem, Canacona. The driver of a truck chose to ‘crash’ his vehicle to prevent three pedestrians, who were a just a few metres away, from coming under the wheels of his truck, after the brakes of his vehicle failed.

The driver of the truck escaped unhurt despite the truck plunging into a gorge due to the absence of a crash barrier.

The police informed that the incident occurred at Gullem and added that the truck driver chose to crash his vehicle in order to save the lives of the three pedestrians.

Eye-witnesses informed about the heroics of the truck driver who chose to risk his life in order to save the lives of the pedestrians.
