Panaji: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is expected to seek a financial package for Goa during his forthcoming meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The Chief Minister left for Delhi on Thursday evening. He will meet Sitharaman on Friday.

The state is presently facing financial crunch due to the closure of the mining industry and slump in the tourism sector.

Giving indications that he could request the Union Finance Minister for a financial package for Goa, Sawant said that if such a request is made then he would let it be known to all.

“I have been called to attend a meeting convened by the Union Finance Minister in New Delhi to discuss the requirements of the state vis-à-vis the national budget for the financial year 2029-10,” he informed, adding that the Chief Ministers of all the states will attend this meeting.

The national budget will be presented in the Parliament on July 5, during the ongoing monsoon session of the House.

The Chief Minister said that if possible, he would also try to meet one or two other Union ministers.

“I would however be meeting Union Minister for Mines, Pralhad Joshi in July to discuss the Goa’s mining problem, ” he added.

The Chief Minister was speaking to  media persons  before his first meeting with BJP workers  at the city BJP headquarters.

“I meet the public in the secretariat at a ‘janata durbar’. However, as a Chief Minister of the BJP, it is my duty to meet the party workers also,” Sawant  said, pointing out, “Although I have not decided to meet the BJP workers on regular basis to know and solve their problems, I intend to meet them at least once every two months, on priority basis.”

“The BJP ministers in my cabinet should also know that it’s their duty to meet the party workers,” he noted.

During the meeting with  the party workers, the Chief Minister discussed their problems – from promotions in government jobs to  ongoing repairs of the swimming pool at Campal in the city which has caused inconvenience to at least 50 swimmers from the state.
