DULER: Churchill Brothers Sports Club registered a solitary goal win over Panjim Footballers in the Goa Professional League organized by GFA, played at Duler stadium under floodlights here on Monday.
After Monday’s win Churchill Brothers have 16 points from 14 matches and climbs one place from the bottom table, while Panjim Footballers stays on 8th position with 18 points from 20 matches.
Churchill Brothers in charge Alfred Fernandes brought three changes Israil Gurung, Pankaj Sona and Arvind Silva after their team had lost by a solitary goal against Goan FC in the last league match.
At the other end Panjim Footballers who had stunned Guardian Angel by a 4-0 margin saw their coach Savio Vaz bring just one change in his starting line-up Devendra Pednekar.
Both the teams though played on an attacking note right from the start, yet in the first quarter one descent strike at the goals were not taken by the strikers.
In the 18th minute Churchill Brothers took the lead through their striker Trinidadian Willis Plaza but was pulled for a foul on defender Clive Miranda by referee sheikh Aboo at the instruction of lines-men Raja Pir. In the 43rd minute Churchill almost scored, but this time Panjim keeper Gurpreet Singh managed to push the ball for a corner off a fierce left footer from Alber Gonsalves for a corner.
On resumption of play match was restricted to midfield for the first twenty minutes. Coach Alfred Fernandes brought James Fernandes from the bench and the latter directed his header at the far corner of the goal off a cross from Alber Gonsalves, 1-0.
In the 83rd minute Panjim Footballers lost a golden opportunity to level terms substitute Sachidanand Satelkar moved dangerously inside the penalty box after dribbling past the defender Suraj came from nowhere to clear the ball over the crossbar.
