A brace of goals by Mevan Dias and Arnold Oliveira and a fine strike by Aditya Salgaocar enabled Churchill Brothers Sports Club start their All India Football Federation (AIFF) Junior League campaign on a promising note as they demolished FC Goa 5-1 at SAG grounds, Utorda on Monday.

Churchill Brothers were without their four regular players –Harsh Patre, Clerence Fernandes, Frevino Fernandes and Vellington Fernandes, who have been selected for India camp, and are currently training at Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Churchill’s striker Mevan Dias found the mark in the 10th and 36th minute while Arnold Oliveira bulged the nets in the 35th and 86th minute after Aditya provided the lead for the team in the very 9th minute.

FC Goa pulled a goal back through Davis Fernandes in the 90+ 2 minutes of play.

FC Goa, who started the match on a hot pace, produced two great moves in a whirlwind fashion in the opening five minutes of play but on both counts their strikers failed to find the mark.

Churchill Brothers SC celebrated these escapes with a fantastic goal with Aditya Salgaocar providing the lead after he collected a neat forward pass from the middle and dodged two rival defenders and unleashed an angular shot, giving no chance at all to F C Goa keeper Savio D’Costa.

Goaded by the success, Churchill Brothers scored another goal within the next minute of play when Meven dispatched a powerful shot after a good build up by the midfield to completely daze the FC Goa keeper under the bar that saw the ball crashing to the far corner of the nets.

FC Goa counter attacked and Selgio Dias and Jovial Dias began to make good inroads inside the rival box for the next fifteen minutes of play. Every time they came in possession of the ball, inside the danger zone, they were either dispossessed by strong Churchill Brothers FC defence or their shots were saved by Churchill goalkeeper Utkarsh Khorjuvenkar, who had a bright day under the bar.

It was now the turn of Churchill Brothers SC team to weave some smart moves with Adiya, Meven and Arnold creating several mesmerising forays. A goal looked imminent every time the trio danced inside the FC Goa box and it was during such a period of ascendency that Churchill Brothers made the score 3-0 in their favour when Arnold struck after collected a neat cross from the right flank to bulge the nets.

Making the FC Goa lads look rather dwarfish in their play, Churchill Brothers with their superior passing abilities and nice positional play controlled the entire first session of play thereafter and scored their fourth goal in the 36th minute in a quick move after Arnold had bulged the nets in the 35th minute. But this time, it was Meven who completed his brace in the 36th minute after running solo inside the box and banging the ball home with great agility and style.

Churchilll Brothers who were leading 4-0 at half time were given some tough time by FC Goa defence in the second session and they could find the mark again only in  the 86th minute of play through Arnold who also completed his brace of goals for the day with a fine strike.

FC Goa who fought back with all the courage and determination but were denied by Churchill’s keeper Utkarsh who proved to be a good pair of hands.

FC Goa finally pulled a goal back in the 90+2 minutes of play through Davis Fernandes who connected a rebound off the rival keeper Utkarsh who had parried a powerful try from the top of
the box.

As the ball rolled on at the feet of Davis, he had no difficulty in slamming it in.
