Central govt official briefed on MPT projects under Sagarmala Scheme

The joint secretary (Sagarmala), Ministry of Shipping Kailash Agarwal visited the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) on Tuesday and took stock of the various projects which are in the pipeline.

Agarwal was welcomed by MPT chairman I Jeyakumar. This was his first visit to the MPT.

MPT chairman Jeyakumar, deputy chairman G P Rai, heads of departments and deputy heads of departments held wide ranging discussions with Agarwal. MPT chairman Jeyakumar presented a power point presentation and briefed Agarwal on the existing facilities and infrastructure available in the port for the shipping industry. The layout of the port, the various berths and other facilities were also explained to the joint secretary. Agarwal was appraised on the present status of the Ship Repair Yard and the ongoing process for tendering the facility afresh for recommencing the same.  The MPT chairman briefed Agarwal on the two coal handling berths operated by M/s JSW and Adani at Mormugao Port and also highlighted the logistics involved in the outbound movement of imported coal from the port to the hinterland by rail network.

The present status and completion of the four lane road connectivity to the port was also discussed.  The joint secretary was also briefed on the progress of the projects undertaken by Mormugao Port under the Ministry of Shipping Sagarmala Scheme.

The MPT chairman explained in detail the prospects of setting up the new Satellite Port at Vijaydurga in Southern Maharashtra, which is developed jointly by the Mumbai Port Trust, Mormugao Port Trust and Maharashtra Maritime Board.

Agarwal was impressed with the visit to Mormugao Port and evinced keen interest in the new satellite port project. He expressed happiness on the measures taken by MPT on the Green Port initiative and the pollution control measures implemented in the port and its environs. He also highlighted the Ministry’s focus on implementing the Sagarmala projects in the country and the availability of grants to the port sector through the Sagarmala Development Corporation.
