CCP nod for Ashtami fair along Campal promenade

PANAJI: The Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) has decided to allow the traditional Ashtami fair on the footpath from Forest Restaurant Point to Panaji ferry point from September 1 to 14 provided the authorities grant necessary permissions.

CCP in order to make a provision for Ashtami fair being organised on the footpath between ferry boat point to Forest Restaurant in Campal and to avoid last minute chaos and confusion for the stall owners, held a meeting of corporators to clear all the doubts.

The Corporation has decided to hold the Ashtami fair from September 1 to September 14 at the same spot where it was being held traditionally since Portuguese era but only after taking permission from the higher authorities, revealed the

Mayor Vithal Naik Chopdekar.

Speaking to media persons, Chopdekar stated that first it was decided to hold the fair at Kala Academy but as it was booked on September 12, the venue of Campal Parade Grounds was considered but due to some work in progress it was also dropped and at last, it was decided that the fair will be held at the same traditional venue.

Advocate Bhobe was consulted in this regard and he while highlighting the prevailing situation, said there is provision under Section 280, CCP can take the permission and can hold the fair and the Commissioner Ajit Roy has been assigned the job of doing a follow up over the issue with the higher authorities.

While corporator Soraya Pinto Makhija from ward number 11 urged the CCP to write to the Traffic police seeking help to ensure that there are traffic police on duty to ensure smooth flow of traffic during the fair.

She also mentioned that mobile toilets be placed every 100-150 metres along the route of the Ashtami fair adding garbage should be cleared everyday and CCP should make sure that once the fair is over, there is no garbage left behind.

As per the standing committee meeting, rate per sq metres will be Rs 30 and August 29 will be the last date for receiving the applications with advance fees and August 30 and 31 applications will be scrutinised/processed and stalls could be allowed to set shop by September 1 or 2. Uniform staff of CCP will be present as supervisors.
