The Calangute village panchayat has called for a special gram sabha on December 13 to take a decision on holding the Sunburn at Baga.
The special gram sabha will be held at the village panchayat hall.
The acting sarpanch Joseph Sequeira informed media that the CEO of Percept Intellectual Property, Asia’s biggest electronic musical dance festival EMD has called on the village panchayat in a letter dated December 7 for hosting the Sunburn Goa music festival at Baga. The 9th edition of the festival will be held from December 27 to 30
The CEO informed the Calangute village panchayat that there is an objection from locals and holding the festival at Baga is very unpredictable. He said that NGOs are objecting to the festival being held at the Vagator hilltop and hence Baga is the ideal venue for the show.
The acting sarpanch informed media that the village panchayat has decided to hold a special gram sabha to take the opinion of the villagers whether to hold the festival or not. Sequeira said that regarding his personal view he is in favour of the festival being held at Baga due to the slack of business in Calangute. Sequeira said that holding the festival in Baga will boost the business community and hoteliers in Calangute since Baga has better infrastructure than Candolim or Vagator. He said that the road network at Arpora has been widened and there are two bridges across Arpora and Calangute for free flow of traffic. Sequeira said there is ample parking space at Baga for more than 3000 cars.
The Calangute MLA Michael lobo said that being the NGPDA chairman and MLA he was in favour of the festival at Baga since business is hampered for the last2 years due to the sewage network. Lobo said that the festival if held at Baga will benefit the locals in the area.
