Ten-man Sporting Clube de Goa managed to pull off a crucial win as they edged out Guardian Angel Sports Club 1-0 at Duler Stadium on Thursday.

In the first ten minutes of the game, the Flaming Oranje were all over the rival territory and came close to breaking the deadlock on two occasions.

In the very second minute, a cross from the right flank by U-20 Myron Fernandes saw a tap by Marcus Mascarenhas land straight into the waiting hands of Angel’s keeper Ram Sroop.

Four minutes later, another cross, this time in the left flank by Cajetan Fernandes saw a firm header by Nigerian Philip Odogwu being tipped over the post by the keeper.

Sporting colts received an early jolt in the 11th minute when their keeper Melroy Fernandes was given marching orders by referee Sharad Naik. The keeper had left his charge to thwart Angel’s Nigerian recruit Yakubu Mohammed just outside the penalty box in one-to-one situation. From the resultant direct free kick by Nigerian Abel Hammond, the strike hit the defensive wall.

With the sending off of the Sporting keeper the tempo of the match came down and it was only in the added time of injury a well-taken shot from the edge of the box by Yakubu Mohammad was timely cleared by Sporting’s Brandon Gomes for a corner.

In the very first minute on crossing over, Angel’s Perryson Rebello moved upfront from the right flank and flashed the ball to overlapping Abel Hammond, who was a second late to tap the ball into the unguarded goal.

While Angel’s colts failed to score at the other end in the 54th minute, a cross from the right flank by Daryl Costa to an unmarked Marcus Mascarenhas who leapt high and directed his header which rebounded off the goal post and the ball travelled to Cajetan Fernandes, who without any delay slammed the ball into the back of the nylons, 1-0.

In the 61st minute, Cajetan almost netted his brace when a square pass by Marcus to Cajetan saw him curl the strike with a left footer at the far corner of the goal which was excellently pushed for a corner by keeper Ram Sroop with an acrobatic save.

After some probing, Angel’s Perryson latched a free kick at the goal which was parried to safety by Sporting’s U-20 keeper Ozen Silva.

At the other end, Flaming Oranje’s Quan Gomes set up Marcus Mascarenhas whose 25-yard blistering shot hit the upright and went out.

Guardian Angel lost a golden opportunity to level terms in the 85th minute, where once again Perryson moved from the right flank and this time flashed the ball at the far end to Yakubu Mohammed who was late to finish into the empty goal.

In the added time, Sanwil D’Costa’s header was tipped over the post by keeper Ozen to keep Sporting’s slate clean and give them full three points.
