Jane Maluka’s music cannot be easily compartmentalised but if one has to do so, her music is sublime; she calls it ‘world soul music’. She is on a journey of self discovery and her music is in tandem with her journey of life. “I have named my music world soul because I have embarked on a personal journey, one of self discovery, of who I am and who I am not. My music serves as my inspirational friend, philosopher and guide on this journey of how we are all part of this world, that we are world citizens and we should respect our own kind,” she says.
She enlightens that her music is an offshoot of her spiritual calling, “Humanity interests me. I am a free spirit and my love for humanity transcends caste, creed, sex, religion and country. I feel pained by racism, sexism, chauvinism, social injustice, poverty and other imbalances.”
Smiling with copious humility when I referred to her as a demi-goddess living in this world full of imbalances she adds, “I want to plant several seeds and see how many fall on desirable ground and take life and this is my mission. My music is akin to the proverbial seed and reaching the right ear will be of paramount importance in contributing to a better world. I want to cause healing through my music and I do believe that I have a special calling to do so.”
As for her songs, she say, “I do not write them, they write me. I am guided by an unseen force or what I may call the universal holy power that guides my music in totality. I simply do not decide intellectually to write a song.”
One of Jane’s prized contributions to the music of the world is her project titled, ‘Your Song Child’. She goes on to say that the inspiration for the project came when her grandson was in his mother’s womb. “This song is for him and the children of the world. I have been building on this project since 2004.” The project has grown into a Magnum Opus, featuring some of the best talent the world has to offer.  The album will feature renowned afro-beat artiste Kaleta, who was the guitarist of Nigerian world music legend Fela Kuti and has also toured with grammy award winner, Lauryn Hill. Other artistes include Afro-pop artiste Mad Ice from Finland, Vlad Shusterman from Israel and Goa’s own Kixmet and Mastermynd among the more than 20 artistes from across the world united for this cause.
Talking of her experience of collaborating with the Goan rock band Kixmet and Goan trance artist Mastermynd, she says, “It’s been a delightful experience because here again we are uniting for a joint purpose; to create and spread the light of awareness and I do appreciate all colours of expression. Music is timeless, seamless and ageless and with this collaboration we have proved it.”
Jane Maluka will shortly be ushering in her newest solo album christened ‘World News’. “The song is already up on my website ‘janemaluka.com’ and has been hugely appreciated and welcomed. It exhorts us all, world citizens to jointly ring in a positive change and fight imbalances of various hues.”
Jane Maluka’s joie-de-vivre and overflowing optimism defies her advancing age. At 57 years, she still sings like a solitary nightingale yearning to be heard by one and all. Her music and voice is healing and one is consumed by it. She has a special message for all Goans, “Believe in peace and harmony and become a living example of positive change.” the music and the musician. “The genre is my definition. The music is the outpouring of my soul. It is a fusion of several influences and yet immaculately original. It is my way of speaking to the world, that we are one love, one blood!
