Tata Motors to roll out Nano cars from Gujarat on June 2

AHMEDABAD: Touted as the world’s cheapest car, Nano will roll out of the newly built plant of Tata Motors at Sanand, near here, on June 2, setting a record of starting production in about 20 months after the leading automobile firm signed an agreement with the Gujarat government

in the height of opposition to its upcoming plant at Singur in West Bengal.
In the presence of Tata group chairman, Mr Ratan Tata, the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi will formally inaugurate the Rs 2,000 crore plant located on city’s outskirts on Ahmedabad-Viramgam highway, a Tata group spokesman said.
The Tata group had signed an agreement with the state government for setting up the plant on October 7, 2008.
The sources said the plant, spread over 1100 acre area, has an initial capacity to produce 2,50,000 cars per annum and later its capacity will be doubled. Several ancillary units have also come up near Sanand.
At present, Nano cars, distribution of which was started in July 2009, were being produced at the Tata Motors facility at Pantnagar in Uttarakhand.
The Tata group decided to shift its Nano car plant to Gujarat due to strong opposition to land acquisition in Singur, where the group and vendors had made substantial investment.
