Show compassion to patients to take care of body, soul

PANAJI: To celebrate the 100 years of the Cosme Matias Menezes (CMM) Group, a continuing medical education CME programme was organised in a city hotel on August 28.

Eminent doctors enlightened the guests about the new developments taking place in the medical field. The scientific session was chaired by Dr R G Wiseman Pinto, professor and head of pathology department and professor in charge of medical education Goa Medical College.
Dr Anita Borges spoke about predictive oncology and the augury of surgical pathology. She said that tissue pathology is directly involved in clinical decision-making; the information that is carried in a pathology report gives the diagnosis, stage, prognosis, prediction and effectiveness of the treatment response. Prediction in the response to specific treatment and prognosis is biological behaviour of cancer. Dr Borges also spoke about targeted therapy, molecular targets, and predictions of toxicity and personalised medicine.
She highlighted the role targeted therapy in breast cancer, chronic myeloid leukaemia, gastrointestinal stromal tumours, lung cancer, colon cancer and brain tumours. Dr Borges also spoke on Personalised Medicine
Dr Luzito De Souza gave a talk on lessons learnt in the practice of surgical Oncology. He advised the doctors to examine the patients diligently, be sensitive to pain, examine the patients from top to bottom, diagnose skillfully, investigate judiciously, take a second opinion when required, communicate effectively, treat effectively, follow up on cancer patients. Dr De Souza also spoke about palliation in cancer patients, palliation with compassion and competence to take care of body, mind and soul.
Dr Sanjay Oak spoke about the history and evolution of medicine. He gave an elaborate presentation of the code of laws in Babylon, Egyptian Mummies, the Indian Physicians, Dhanvantri, Charaka, Vagbhata, Sushruta, the Chinese medicine, Muslim medicine, Hippocratic Oath, the discovery of oxygen by Joseph Priestly. He further spoke on the discovery of microscope by Leewenhoek, the discovery of stethoscope by Laennec, and the discovery of condom by Casa Nova.
Mr Cesar Menezes, the chairman and managing director of Wallace Pharmaceuticals welcomed the guest and Ms Rashmi Menezes, director sales and marketing Wallace Pharma gave a brief report of Wallace Pharma. Dr Divya Menexes proposed a vote of thanks. All the speakers paid glowing tributes to the CMM Group. The CME Programme was coordinated by Dr Wiseman Pinto, Mr Cesar Menezes and Dr Maria Menezes and was well-attended by a large number of doctors of Goa and the family members of CMM group.
