To access data on tax deducted at source from your income you have to first register. Let me explain the full procedure, so that those readers who have still not availed of the facility but would like to, can register themselves.
Online Registration is a one-time activity wherein, a PAN holder has to fill in and submit a Registration form online through this website. The detailed procedure is as mentioned below:
Go to the website: www.incometaxindia.gov.in.
On the left of the home page of the site you will see a column of links; the sixth link from top is ‘View Your Tax Credit’. Clicking that link you will get a menu in which the first link is ‘Register for 26AS’. Click that link, and it will take you to www.tin-nsdl.com/panregistration.asp.
Go to ‘Steps for viewing Tax Credit’ and click ‘1. Online Registration of PAN by PAN holder’.
Follow the instructions on the page that opens. Click the ‘registration’ link in the first instruction. After entering all the details (PAN, User ID, Password, contact details if any etc) on the form that opens, click on ‘Submit’.
This registration request has to be authorised by a TIN-FC. Authorisation means verification of Identity of a PAN Holder for the purpose of viewing Annual Tax Statement. For getting registration request authorised by a TIN-FC, PAN holder may choose either to:
Personally visit the TIN-FC of his choice, or
Select a TIN-FC to visit the PAN Holder for personal verification. In this case, select any TIN-FC from a list of TIN-FCs who offer this facility in the city provided in contact address. Facility of selecting a TIN FC to visit can be availed of only in those locations where a TIN-FC is present. In this option, the PAN holder will be prompted to enter his contact details in the fields provided on the online registration form.
On successful registration, an acknowledgement receipt will be displayed on screen. Save and print this acknowledgement receipt as this is required for to be presented to the TIN-FC at the time of verification of PAN.
PAN verification has to be completed within 15 calendar days of registration, otherwise, the registration will cease to exist and PAN holder will have to register online again.
If you choose to personally visit a TIN-FC for authorisation, the PAN holder has to present the following documents:
Print out of acknowledgement receipt generated onscreen at the time of registration of PAN.
Original PAN card along with a photocopy.
After identity of PAN holder is verified, he should sign in the space provided for signature of PAN holder in acknowledgement, in presence of the TIN-FC. TIN-FC will visually verify signature with signature on PAN card and thereafter, authorise the registration request online. PAN holder can also view the status of his registration online.
After twelve hours of authorisation by TIN-FC, the PAN holder can login to the TIN central system and view Form 26AS at https://onlineservices.tin.nsdl.com/TIN/JSP/security/PanLogin.jsp. Alternatively you can go to www.incometaxindia.gov.in. On the left of the home page of the site you will see a column of links; the sixth link from top is ‘View Your Tax Credit’. Clicking that link you will get a menu. Click the second link ‘Login to View’. Log in and view the Form 26AS that shows the tax deducted at source from your income. There is no charge for viewing Tax Credit online.
