Nanusand – Goa’s first manufactured sand

PANAJI: Nanusand is Goa’s first manufactured sand and the only alternative to river sand which is depleting rapidly. Nanusand has come at a crucial time, as the Karnataka Government has banned the sale of Karwar sand to Goa, adding to the woes of the builders for want of quality sand.

The M30 grade sand manufactured by Nanu Industries at Conquirem village in Sattari Taluka, is not only the answer to the shortage of sand for the builders, it is eco-friendly as it contains less carbon dioxide and saves on cost of transport.
The newly inaugurated plant has found its first buyer in KMC ordering for 5,000 cu m of sand. The Goa sand market is estimated at
Rs 1,000 crores.
Nanusand is made from basaltic rock deposits crushed by jaw crushers. It is then further crushed in cone crushers till it becomes much smaller mixed with metal used in concrete making. It is then fed into vertical shaft impactors, wherein rock over rock action takes place and the product becomes rounded. The product is then fed to various sets of screens to obtain the 4.75 mm downsize particles.
The production plant has a capacity of 200 tons an hour, and in two-shifts a day it can produce 1,400 tons of sand.  The Nanusand is an attempt to save rivers from excessive sand mining. Most readymix concrete plants are turning to manufactured sand in the making of concrete. Nanu has started identifying places to install sand depots and the next sand manufactured plant is will soon come up at the borders of Goa and Maharashtra.
The Nanu Group, which has started a brick manufacturing kiln, intends to diversify into software. Presently it is branching out into more hotels and resorts.
