Khalap urges distributors to be sincere

MAPUSA: The chairman of the State Law Commission, Mr Ramakant Khalap has urged distributors to supply quality goods to customers and refrain from indulging in unethical trading as that would only hamper the prospects of doing good business.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the Mapusa branch of the All Goa Fast Moving Consumer Goods and Telecom Distributors Association, Mr Khalap said that although there are specific rules and regulations against adulteration of food materials, it was observed that a lot of goods sold to the customers were adulterated and this was not good for the market.

"When buyers are impressed with certain items and want to buy them they are ready to pay the price after some bargain hunting, however in spite of paying the desired price they later realise that the goods purchased are of inferior quality," Mr Khalap rued.

Companies spend crores of rupees by advertising and this money is then recovered by squeezing the customers, he said. "If the customers build trust in a company and are confident that the goods are of quality value, then he will willingly buy it immaterial what the advertisements states," he said.

The president of the All Goa FMCG and Telecom Distributors Association, Mr Prabhudessai said that the sector is the fourth largest sector of the Indian economy. The profit margins given to the distributors earlier by the manufacturing companies have now come down and this was mainly as we did not have a body to control unethical business," informed Mr Prabhudessai. He felt that this body formed now could go ahead and form a healthy relation between the company and the retailer.

He said that while there were 28,000 distributors all over India, in Mapusa area there are around 12,000 retailers. Mr Prabhudessai also advocated the need of classifying items as luxury, non luxury, essential and non essential items.
