PANAJI: Opposing the nationalisation of rivers, the Bharat Mukti Morcha (BMM), on Tuesday, demanded to amend the National Waterways Act, 2016 and exclude six state rivers from its schedule.
Traditional fishermen from Odxel, Cacra, Nauxi and Bambolim villages under the banner of BMM questioned the Chief Minister as to why people of Goa
were not taken into confidence before inclusion of state rivers in a schedule under National Waterways Act 2016.
“Why the permission agreement of the Goa government with the central government has been kept as a secret document?” they asked.
The movement to oppose coal handling is led by fishermen and motivated by instincts of survival and livelihood, said Maggie Silveira, president of BMM, adding dredging of the river Zuari has proved to have caused ecological damage.
