Bihar registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Punjab to book their place in the quarterfinals of the Junior Girls National Football Championship, organised by GFA, played at Duler stadium on Friday.
Punjab kept the Bihar strikers at bay during the first session, as only a win could secure them a place in the quarters.
Hardly a minute into the match and Bihar would have opened their account, but Punjab keeper Lovedeep Kaur fisted the ball over the post after a scorching right footer from Aashu Kumari.
On crossing over, Punjab were all over the rival territory, but this time it was Bihar’s custodian who time and again denied Junior International Manisha and Jaspreet Kaur from scoring in a one to one situation.
Another glorious chance went in vain for Punjab when a 30-yard strike by Manisha hit the upright bar and rebounded off the goal line.
Bihar too had its moment of glory in patches, where finally in the 80th minute Aashu Kumari controlled a cross from Nisha Kumari and coolly slotted the ball into the nets making it 1-0.
Bihar came close to netting their second goal, but Punjab keeper Lovedeep brought a full stretched diving save to hand Surbhi Kumar a corner.
In a match held earlier in the day, Haryana drubbed Madhya Pradesh by 13-0 margin, yet failed to qualify as they lost to Tamil Nadu.
The northern state went into the breather with a cusion of four goals.
The massive number of goals was compiled by Samiksha (5), Renu (3), Pooja Devi (2), Moma (2) and Anay Bai accounted for the goals.
