Bicholim bandharas running out of water

SANKHALI: With rains evading the state for some days now, gates of bandharas which were opened by WRD department in the first week of June have been closed down to save water. According to assistant engineer of WRD P V Shreekumar, gates of Virdi, Sal and Assonora bandharas were closed two days ago as rains have got delayed.

Though the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has said that the situation is not worrisome, they are monitoring the situation regularly however he cautioned people not to waste water. Amthane dam in Bicholim taluka has enough water that can last for around 20 more days, Shreekumar told.

Meanwhile, farmers in Bicholim taluka are running out of patience as they have not received rain for almost one month. “We are facing a major disaster as seeds have dried up and it will be very difficult for us to restart the work without rain,” said Sakharam Pednekar from Mayem.

Potable water is being supplied to Bardez taluka from the Tillari water which is treated at Assonora water treatment plant. However, days ahead may be tough on people if it does not rain shortly.
