Betalbatim Sporting Club registered a solitary goal win over Sao Jose de Areal to enter the quarterfinals of 42nd Cana-Benaulim Soccer Tournament played at St John the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Saturday.
The all important goal for Betalbatim SC came off in the 12th minute through attacking medio Sidney Sequeira, who on receiving a neat pass from Clifford Miranda bulged the nets to beat Sao Jose de Areal keeper Joseph Monteiro.
Betalbatim who appeared to be a superior side in terms of positional play could have increased their lead within the next few minutes but a well taken shot off Clifford Miranda just missed the mark narrowly.
Betalbatim continued playing an attacking game with their midfield doing a good job while the defence gave nothing away.
On the other hand, Sao Jose de Areal fumbled with the ball on crucial occasions with their strikers unable to have good control and as a result whatever chances came their way, could not converted them into goals.
The second session too mostly belonged to Betalbatim SC. With neat passes they tried to beat the rival defence but Areal defenders Aggio Antao and Vishal Fernandes did a good job to clear the ball to safety when Betalbatim medio Oliver D’Souza came rushing into the box.
Betalbatim defence stood tall, which was ably managed by Manishawn Fernandes and company while in the half line, Crushner Pereira appeared lethal for most part of play.
In the last minute of play, Crushner Pereira’s fierce shot was somehow saved by Areal keeper Joseph Monteiro.
