Berta Menezes birth centenary celebrated


It is important to have large families like Berta Menezes as that will ensure you are remembered for the next 1,000 years, said Teotonio Pereira while speaking as the chief guest at the birth centenary celebrations of Dona Berta Menezes organised by Dalgado Konknni Akademi (DKA) on August 24. President of DKA Tomazinho Cardozo, secretary Vincy Quadros, treasurer Celso Fernandes, Berta’s daughter Malusha Fernandes and granddaughter Sonalia Menezes e Botelho were present on the dais with the chief guest.

He further spoke about the importance of the Roman script that is used internationally, and all languages can be written and understood in that script including Hindi. He brought to everyone’s notice that Roman script is being used even in Hindi films. He cherishes the values of Berta especially her patriotism, bringing people together and her joy in doing whatever she was entrusted with. “She was indeed a respected lady and that is precisely the reason to celebrate her life even for the next 1000 years”, he added.

In his address, Tomazinho Cardozo appreciated the virtues of Berta and said that soon Goa will want to know more about her. He added that DKA may take up printing of Berta’s literary works soon. He further said that Berta always made use of Konkani and that it is important to follow her example. He announced that the installation of an award of Rs10,000 sponsored by the Menezes family for a lady writer in Roman Konkani will be given annually at the Dalgado award ceremony.

The programme began with a presentation on Berta’s life. Sonalia Menezes e Botelho spoke about her grandmother. This was followed with a presentation on views and experiences about Bertha by various people. A booklet on Berta’s life was also released on the occasion.

Amongst those present on the occasion were Fr Jezuino Almeida, Bro Eusebio Miranda, Fausto Da Costa, Premanand A Lotlikar, Fr Elvis Fernandes, Fr Cosme Costa, Edward de Lima, Miguel Braganza, Prajal Sakhardande, Savio Pinto, Willy Goes besides several Konkani writers.
