VASCO: Scoring once in each half through attacking midfielder Shaikhom Ronald Singh and striker Manvir Singh West Bengal registered a 2-0 win against Meghalaya and topped Group A in the Santosh Trophy Football tournament played at Tilak maidan ,Vasco on Monday.
West Bengal who dominated the first half were complacent for the major part of the second session and woke up in the last ten minutes of play to demonstrate their superiority.
Though West Bengal were at the receiving end in the second session they defended well and suddenly created a great move in the 86th minute to bolster their lead through Manvir Singh. Bengal took nine minutes to go into the lead through Shaikhom Singh in the first session.
With this win,West Bengal has collected 10 points,having beaten Chandigarh and Services by a goal each and drew against Goa 1-1.On the other hand,Meghalaya lost to Chandigarh 1-2 and also against Goa( 1-2).Meghalaya however defeated Services 2-0. Meghalaya ended their campaign on three points.
Meghalaya had a first shot at goal when in the 8th minute striker Enester Malngiang curled his free kick into the left corner of West Bengal goal with their keeper stretching full length to parry the dangerous ball for an abortive flag kick.
Attacking midfielder Manvir Singh worked his way down the right flank and after taking in his stride two Meghalaya defenders sent a piercing pass to Shaikhom Ronald Singh into the six yard box from where the debonair medio placed the ball to the far end of Meghalaya nets, giving no chance at all to keeper Kenio Lyngkhoi. Bengal appeared to be sluggish in the second session and this lethargic attitude was utilised by their opponents who began to attack with gusto .Their swift moves put the West Bengal defense in disarray for most part of the second session and a goal looked imminent.
Meghalaya’s substitute medio Fullmoon Mukhim almost scored in the 64th minute of play but his glancing header missed the mark narrowly off a cross from defender Bishharlang Kharumnid.
Against the run of play, West Bengal created a great move in the 86th minute wherein Manvir Singh latched on to a smart pass of Shaikhom Ronald Singh to bulge the nets with an angular effort. Meghalaya keeper Kenio who put up a brave front had no chance to stop the ball.
