Because green is now in vogue


The Green Fashion India (GFI), an ecological and sustainable initiative of M K S S S’s School of Fashion Technology, Pune is all set to organise the fifth edition of the international conference on October 5 and 6 at Kala Academy, Goa. Goan students and Goa based green entrepreneurs participation is welcome.

With the vision to be the leading platform for the exchange of ideas, information and sustainable practices, Green Fashion India envisages that green fashion as the only choice for present and future. To achieve this it involves individuals, institutions and organisations of the fashion arena with an active involvement of society and communities in the most conscious manner.

This year the forum is introducing another facet as an extension of green fashion- ‘Green Connect For Social Design – A Coordinated Action Today For Tomorrow’s Solution’ that not only contributes to sustainability in fashion industry but also enhances society and communities to go hand in hand for enriched living.

The key note of the event will be shared by editor of Voice of Fashion – IMG Reliance, Shefalee, Founder of BIODYE, Dr Vandana Bhandari and Ash Alibhai. This will be followed by the felicitation of sustainability entrepreneurs and artisans and the Green Fashion Film Festival, which will be inaugurated by Benjamin Itter. There will be panel discussions on ‘Practices and Innovation in Crafts’ by Poonam Pandit (Kalakaar) and Upasana Designer from (Auroville), ‘Practices and Innovation in Technology’ by Lenzing Practices and Innovation in Education by Adrien Roberts,  ‘GUCCI Initiative with AC&M Practices and Innovation in Design’ by Apurva Kothari (No Nasties) and Kelshikar, ‘Practices and Innovation in Promotion of Green Fashion’ by strategist and curator of Sustainable Fashion – IMG Reliance / Lakme Fashion Week, Gautam Vazirani.

A flash mob on ‘My Own Way’, students’ activities, and other students’ competitions, invitee paper presentations, will be final activity for the first day. The paper presentation competition is open to all fashion students, faculties and industry experts. The best three paper presentations will be displayed in the form of posters and the participants can also display the actual product. All the selected papers will be published in the GFI E-publication. The abstract for oral and poster presentation should not exceed 300 words and should not be less than 280 words. The title of the abstract should be followed by the details of presenter 1 and 2 for name, institute, contact details and e-mail id. The final paper should be of minimum 5000 words and maximum 5200 words.

The second day of the event will witness the Students Green Fashion Collection Competition. The ‘My Own Way’, is a sustainable fashion design competition inspiring students to create beautiful and wearable clothing taking into account traditional crafts. These traditional crafts are required to be preserved and translated into modern times in order to compete with today’s fashion world. For the competition designers are asked to combine sustainable practices on the one hand and incorporating traditional crafts on the other hand. The 2018 competition is open to students pursuing fashion or related studies, enrolled at an Indian university or having Indian citizenship studying abroad.

The students are challenged to design a fashion collection that will keep in mind traditional crafts combined with sustainable social design practices.

There will also be Green Fashion Showcase (fashion show) which will feature designers like Hemang Agrawal, Swati Argade, Karishma Shahani Khan, followed by a panel discussion with all, moderated by Meher Castelino.

A briefing by Benjamin Itter and Philippe on ‘Ethical Fashion Show from Europe’ will be followed by the Grand Finale Designer Showcase by Rajesh Pratap Singh. The event will conclude with the release of the research journal and a prize distribution ceremony.
