PANAJI: Congress candidate for Panaji bypoll Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate on Thursday promised to provide one government job to each family in the city within the next two years, if he gets elected in the May 19 bypoll.
Addressing a public meeting near Maruti temple in Mala, Babush also assured that he will fulfil 80 per cent of the promises made in his manifesto over the next 24 months.
“Elect me as your MLA, I will give government job to each and every family in just two years and this is my commitment to you. It is a challenge and I will do it and come back to you. After two years, based on my performance, the people of Panaji will prepare my report card and declare whether I have passed or failed,” said Babush.
Taking a potshot at BJP and former chief minister Manohar Parrikar, Babush said that the former BJP MLA, who had been MLA of the city for over two decades, has failed to provide employment to the youth.
“Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, in just one of his departments, has ensured that out of the 100 jobs, 99 are given to youth from Valpoi. The BJP ought to answer today as to why their MLA, who was either the opposition leader or the chief minister holding 30 different portfolios failed to provide employment to the city youth,” he said.
Babush said that the BJP-led coalition government will not exist after May 23, and claimed that the alliance partners that are currently with BJP will withdraw their support and be on the side of the Congress party on May 24 to form the next government.
“Why the alliance partners of the BJP are not campaigning for Sidharth Kuncalienker? The alliance partners have come to know that water has reached up to the head and they don’t want to drown with the BJP. Alliance partners will be with us on May 24,” he said.
Stating that he has never brought leaders from outside to canvass for him in the election campaigns in the past, the Congress candidate questioned his opponent BJP as to why they had to bring Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari to seek support for Kuncalienker.
“Why Kuncalienker needs to get an outsider to tell what kind of person he is. This is vindictive politics; the people who have extended their support to me are being threatened. The Chief Minister today is roaming in the constituency to seek support but I am sure he will not be seen in Panaji from May 19 and he will not be on his chair on May 24,” he said.
Babush said that his character assassination has been done by BJP by plotting conspiracies and filing false cases against him. He said that he has faith in God and the judicial system to walk free from all the criminal charges against him.
GPCC president Girish Chodankar, leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and others also spoke on the occasion.
