Babu Azgaonkar counters reports of trying to defect from MGP

MARGAO: Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) legislator Manohar ‘Babu’ Azgaonkar on Thursday denied reports of him even weighing the option of defecting from the party and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the wake of the sudden passing away of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

There were reports that Azgaonkar along with another MGP legislator had made attempts to join the BJP for which they were lured by a middleman.  As per sources, the duo had even held a meeting with the central BJP leaders who were down in Goa for the final rites of the former chief minister Manohar Parrikar.

“Ramakrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar is my leader. Who gave you this news? It is a rumour. I am an MGP MLA and will remain with it,’’ he said adding that some politicians are trying to tarnish his political image.

It may be recalled that no sooner the former chief minister Parrikar passed away on Sunday, regional political parties and independent MLAs had held meetings. It is said that there were parleys over portfolios and positions to support the new BJP-led government in Goa. After hectic political activities, top-level meetings with the Union minister Nitin Gadkari and BJP national president Amit Shah and political drama during midnight, Pramod Sawant was chosen as the chief minister of Goa.
